LLD/DPhil Scholarships in Sexual and Reproductive Rights in Africa 2018 (Fully-Funded)

The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, calls for applications for full-time doctoral scholarships in the field of sexual and/or reproductive rights and their intersection with culture or criminalisation in the African region. The doctoral scholarships are aimed at strengthening the Sexual and Reproductive Rights in AfricaProgramme of the Centre for Human Rights in ways that develop a distinct focus on interrogating culture and/or criminalisation as part of broader discourses on sexual or reproductive rights as they relate to the African region.

The scholarships require a three-year period of residence at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa.

The Centre for Human Rights is both an academic department and a non-governmental organisation, and works towards human rights education in Africa, a greater awareness of human rights, the wide dissemination of publications on human rights in Africa, and the improvement of the rights of women, people living with HIV, indigenous peoples, sexual minorities and other disadvantaged or marginalised persons or groups across the continent.


  • The scholarships are comprehensive, covering tuition fees, travel and living expenses and ancillary costs.


  • Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in law or humanities focusing on, or closely related to, the field of sexual and/or reproductive rights;
  • Have excellent proficiency in both written and spoken English;
  • Have excellent proficiency in academic research;
  • Possess ability to work independently.
